Stranded Lankans refuse Indonesian assistance

A group of Sri Lankans stranded off Indonesian waters have refused assistance from Indonesia, reports said today.

Indonesian media reported that the ship transporting the Sri Lankans encountered engine failure and was adrift off Mentawai Islands.

A rescue team had been sent to offer assistance to the approximately 40 Sri Lankans on the ship but they had refused to accept help from Indonesia.

The people on the ship believed to be illegal asylum seekers have insisted on being helped by Australian authorities.
