Death toll reaches 30, over 14 missing

The death toll from the extreme weather experienced in the country over the past few days reached 30 by today with over 14 still missing, the Disaster Management Center said.

In the latest incident, a boat carrying 22 people capsized at Tissa wewa in Tissamaharama during bad weather this afternoon and at least 5 of them had drowned.

The DMC said that as of today 48,883 people have been displaced around the country from floods and landslides.

In total over 200,000 people have been affected by the bad weather with the department of meteorology warning of more rain over the next few hours.

The Puttalam district is so far the worst affected with 28,682 people displaced.
