Police arrest asylum seekers in Eravur

The police have arrested 14 people in Eravur who were preparing to head to Australia by boat illegally, the police media unit said today.

According to the police, the 14 people were staying in a house in Chenkaladi at the time of the arrest last evening.

Among the 14 people preparing to make the illegal journey to Australia were women and children.

The arrest came on the eve of the arrival to Sri Lanka by Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr.

The Australian Foreign Minister is to discuss the people smuggling issue with his Sri Lankan counterpart as well as President Mahinda Rajapaksa. (Colombo Gazette)

Government tables changes to 20th Amendment

The Government today tabled changes to the draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution. The changes were tabled when a two day debate on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution began in Parliament today. Fort Police station temporarily closed

The Fort Police station was temporarily closed after a policeman had tested positive for the coronavirus. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said that the general public had been advised to visit the Pettah or Slave Island police stations for services required and not the Fort Police.
