The post of the UNP leader was given 6 years as opposed to the current one year term after the proposal was adopted at the UNP convention today.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake announced at the conclusion of the convention at the UNP party headquarters Sirikotha that 4978 members voted in favor of the proposed amendments to the party constitution while 337 UNP members voted against it.
Accordingly the UNP leader can remain in the post for 6 years while the other key positions in the party will also remain unchanged.
UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe, speaking to reporters after the convention said that the votes of some members who opposed the amendments had not been counted.
He said that the whole voting process was not fair and the issue will be raised with the party at a lter date.
UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa was among those who had voted against the amendments.
