Kotte Mayor Janaka Ranawaka has threatened to reveal the names of the police officers and drug dealers involved in the heroin trade in the Kotte area.
Ranawaka told The Sunday Leader that he will make the startling revelation on his return from a trip to India this week.
“I will have a press conference this week and reveal the names. My life is under threat but I will still make the revelation,” he said.
Ranawaka said that he has also written to IGP N. K. Illangakoon regarding the threats to his life after he had first claimed there were links between some police officers and heroin dealers.
However he says the IGP had responded saying police security is not given to any mayor in the country. “If you go to the official residence of any other mayor you will find they have police log books outside.
“So they have security,” he said.
The police had last week sought details from Ranawaka over a statement he had made to the media alleging links between the police and drug dealers.
Police media spokesman SSP Priyashantha Jayakody said that the statement made by the Kotte mayor harmed the image of the police and is a threat to the peace in the Welikada area.
The police had asked the mayor to clarify his statement where he has said that some 20 police officers were involved in the heroin trade in Welikada.
