British dance act Basement Jaxx will perform at one day matches in January in an attempt to attract a younger crowd to cricket.
Basement Jaxx will DJ between innings of Australia v Sri Lanka matches at the MCG on January 11, the Gabba on January 18 and the SCG on January 20.
Plans are underway for punters with tickets to the matches to gain entry to an intimate after-party with the UK chart toppers.
Cricket Australia chose Basement Jaxx to appeal to 20 to 35 year olds and push a summer party vibe.
“One Day Cricket is becoming a big social day out,” Cricket Australia’s marketing manager Julian Dunne said.
“People are dressing up in costumes, it’s more than just the cricket, we want to extend the entertainment on and off the field.
“Where the AFL and NRL have used rock bands at games, Cricket Australia is leaning towards dance music, with more DJs tipped to be announced.
Simon Ratcliffe of Basement Jaxx said the band had never been to a cricket match but were looking forward to the experience.
“The only times I’ve ever watched cricket has been in hotels in Australia,” Ratcliffe said.
“It’s hard to turn down a trip to Australia when you know it’s going to be cold and dark in the UK.”
The pair will playhits including Where’s Your Head At, Red Alert and Good Luck with a guest vocalist. (Herald Sun)
