The suspects involved in the Tangalle boat incident who were arrested and deported from Cocos islands in Australia today, have been handed over to the Matara police for further investigations.
According to the police media unit the 14 suspects were questioned by the CID at the Katunayake airport after they arrived in the country today.
They were then handed over to the Matara police for further investigations and will then be produced in court.
The police media unit said that the 14 suspects were arrested after a copy of a court warrant was handed over to INTERPOL.
With the assistance of INTERPOL the 14 suspects were arrested by the Australian Federal police and deported to Sri Lanka, the police media unit said.
The 14 suspects were wanted over the incident in Tangalle where fishermen on a multi-day fishing trawler were attacked and the trawler was then stolen.
The trawler was used by the 14 suspects to head to Australia to seek asylum. (Colombo Gazette)
