The latest restaurant to open in Colombo targeting high-end customers is Qbaa located at De Fonseka Place in Colombo 5.
A restaurant, wine cellar and music lounge, Qbaa was launched by a quartet including cricketing great Sanath Jayasuriya.
Jayasuriya said that he was approached by his partners with the idea of opening the new restaurant and the master blaster thought why not.
“We came up with the concept and our initial plan was just to have the restaurant,” Jayasuriya said.
Well known Sri Lankan architect Murad Ismail was picked to design the theme for the venue and according to Jayasuriya the architect gave more than what they expected.
“Murad’s theme and interior design helped us open not just a restaurant but a wine cellar, the music lounge/pub and a rooftop dining area,” Jayasuriya said.
The indoor restaurant is spacious and gives total comfort to the customers, while those who prefer a more environment friendly atmosphere can wine and dine on the rooftop restaurant.
For those who want privacy, Qbaa has two private dining areas and a wine cellar catering to eight people and providing some of the best wines including Chilean and New Zealand wines. Then there is the music lounge/pub where patrons can come and chill, listen to some jazz music by an American Jazz musician and enjoy a cocktail in the presence of flair bartender Samuel Handy.
The restaurant is managed by experienced hotelier and marketer Mohan Raj Mahendran, a product of Les Roches Hotel School, Switzerland.
Mahendran says the restaurant dishes out mainly fusion cuisine dished out by Chefs Kosala Perera and Darell Smith.
“Our menu includes Australian Lamb, Tasmanian salmon, Baked crab, the chef’s salad and Angus beef stake. Our sea food is fresh and is picked from the catch of the day,” he said. Mahendran says the restaurant mainly caters to the up-market, executive customers and from day one the restaurant has met its target.
He also says Qbaa is set to open a new car park which could cater to around 50 cars. Having worked in some of the leading hotels and restaurants both in Sri Lanka and overseas, Mahendran says his goal is to make sure Qbaa becomes the number one restaurant in Sri Lanka. (Courtesy The Sunday Leader)
