The police arrested 31 Australia bound asylum seekers and four human smugglers in Vavuniya last night.
Our reporter in the area said that the would-be asylum seekers were in a bus which was about to take them to a drop off point when they were arrested.
The bus was to take them to the location where a boat had been prepared to transport the asylum seekers to Australia by sea.
Among those in the bus were women and children including a new born baby. The raid was carried out by the police intelligence unit.
The asylum seekers had paid nearly 400,000 each for the illegal journey to the human smugglers.
