Mother and son assaulted, son dies

A mother and her 16 year old son were assaulted in?their?house while they were sleeping in Monaragala yesterday, the police media unit said today.

The police said that an?unidentified person had entered the house and assaulted both of them using a pole.

According to the police media unit, the mother and son sustained serious injuries in the incident and were admitted to hospital.

The 16 year old boy subsequently succumbed to his injuries in hospital while the mother is still?receiving?treatment.

The motive for the attack is still not known. The?Monaragala police are conducting investigations.

Actor Ryan Van Rooyen fined and released

Actor Ryan Van Rooyen, who was arrested in Dubai and deported to Sri Lanka and remanded, was today fined Rs. 4000 and released. Van Rooyen was detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on April 4th and handed over to the Weligama Police the next day. The Police then produced him before a Magistrate and the Magistrate ordered that he be remanded. Ryan Van Rooyen was among several people arrested with notorious underworld leader Makandure Madush at a hotel in Dubai in February.

Government to carry out independent security audit

The Government has decided to carry out an independent security audit following the Easter Sunday attacks. Non-Cabinet Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva said that tourists will not return to Sri Lanka in a day or two.
