A special discussion is to be held next month over the High Security Zones in Jaffna and private land being occupied by the military.
The decision to convene a special meeting to discuss the issue was taken following the district development meeting in Jaffna today.
Social Services Minister Douglas Devananda and Northern province Governor G.A Chandrasiri were among those who took part in the district development meeting today.
Among other issues discussed at today’s meeting was the poaching by Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters.
Minister Devananda said that poaching by outsiders in the waters around Jaffna cannot be allowed and he assured that the issue will be addressed with the relevant authorities.
He also called for political unity to address issues faced by Tamils in the country through a political solution.
EPDP parliamentarian Murugesu Chandrakumar, speaking at today’s meeting in Jaffna, said that the stand of the EPDP is that private land in Jaffna occupied by the army should be returned to its rightful owners.
He said that the issue has already been addressed to a greater extend following discussion with the army. (Colombo Gazette)
