Courts crippled as judges, lawyers protest

Legal proceedings in Colombo were crippled today as Judges, Magistrates and lawyers protested over the attack on the secretary of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) Manjula Tilakarate.

All court cases which were to be heard today at the Colombo High Court were postponed for October 22 while Magistrate court cases were postponed to October 12.

Lawyers staged protests outside the Colombo Hulftsdorp court today over the attack while the High Court judges Association said its judges had withdrawn from work today.

The secretary to the Judicial Services Commission Manjula Tillakaratne was assaulted by an unidentified gang in Mount Lavinia last morning.

Tillakaratne was admitted to hospital following the assault but the police said he was not in a serious condition.

Tillakaratne had gone to ST. Thomas Mount Lavinia to drop his child and wife to attend a function wand was reading the newspaper in his car parked along Hotel road when he was assaulted.

The government information department, in a statement, meanwhile condemned the incident and said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had ordered the police chief to launch a thorough investigation into the attack.
