The West Indies were crowned Twenty 20 cricket world champions after they beat Sri Lanka in the final by 36 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today.
Batting first after winning the toss the West Indies scored 137 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs with Marlon Samuels top scoring with 78 runs off 56 balls.
Samuels smashed six sixes during his innings and helped increase the West Indies score after his team initially found it hard to score.
The West Indies lost two wickets for 14 runs including that of big hitting Chris Gayle who fell for just 3 runs.
However Samuels then slammed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground including fast bowler Lasith Malinga who ended with figures of 54 runs off 4 overs with no wickets.
Ajantha Mendis was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers taking 4 wickets for just 12 runs off 4 overs.
The Sri Lankans got off to a bad start losing opener Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck and from there the West Indies made it difficult for the Sri Lankans to score.
Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals and never got back into the game after losing Captain Mahela Jayawardena for 33 runs and the team were bowled out for 101 runs.
Sunil Narine was the pick of the West Indies bowlers taking 3 wickets for just 9 runs.
The West Indies players danced in the ground after the win, their first cricket world cup in over 20 years.
