Irudeniyaya residents object to land acquisition

Residents of Irudeniyaya have objected to moves by the government to acquire agricultural land in the area for development purposes.

An organization representing the people in the area said that a mass protest will be staged in the Kurumegala town on Wednesday against this move.

Chairman of the organization K.D Sunil Jayasinghe said that over 2500 families stand to be displaced as a result of the land acquisition.

He said that the land was handed over to the people for farming activities by former Prime Minister the late Sirimavo Bandaranayake.

Former President R. Premadasa had made attempts to take over the land for development work but following protests the move was abandoned.

However now notice has been issued that the land, which includes six villages, will be acquired by the government for development work. (Colombo Gazette)
