Australia wins the women’s T20 world cup

Australia won the women’s twenty 20 world cup beating England in the final by 4 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium this evening.

Batting first the Australian women posted 143 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs thanks mainly to Jess Cameron who top scored with 45 runs.

Cameron struck a 35-ball 45 which included a six and five fours after England got the first wicket with 51 runs on the board.

In reply the English women took the fight to Australia till the last ball and ended up on 138/9 in 20 overs.

England lost wickets at regular intervals and despite some good hits by Charlotte Edwards who scored 28 runs and Sarah Taylor who scored 19 runs, the English could not finish the job.

The Australians reached the final beating the West Indies in the semi final while England beat New Zealand in the other semi final.

Women from all the Test playing nations took part in the women’s Twenty 20 world cup.

The final of the Twenty 20 women’s world cup took place just before the more popular men’s final between hosts Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
