Champika warns of power cuts

Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka has warned that a crisis situation could arise in the power sector if there is a further delay in rain falling in the hydro catchment areas.

The Power and Energy Ministry quoted the Minister as urging the public to conserve electricity in order to avoid a power crisis.

The concerns raised by the Minister come despite the Norochcholai coal power plant operating at full capacity following the recent breakdown.

Power cuts had been imposed in late August after the coal power station broke down and there was insufficient rain at the hydro catchment areas.

Addressing the media last month Minister Ranawaka had said that every effort will be taken to prevent a power crisis in future. (Colombo Gazette)
