Navy nabs 77 Australia bound people

The navy intercepted a boat carrying 77 people to Australia today 20 nautical miles off the Thoduwawa seas, the navy media unit said.

According to the navy, the trawler named “Nirmani” was intercepted by a Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Western Naval Command.

Among those on the boat were 61 Tamils, 14 Sinhalese and 02 Muslims. The navy said that there were 75 males, a woman and a child.

The asylum seekers are residents of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Puttlam, Colombo, Udappuwa, Mannar, Chilaw and Kalpitiya.

They were escorted to the Modara Harbour to be handed over to the CID for further investigations. (Colombo Gazette)
