Malini resigns from parliament

Veteran actress Malini Fonseka resigned from her parliament seat today, the government information department said.

A UPFA National list MP, Fonseka handed over her resignation letter to the Elections Commissioner.

Reports said that Fonseka had been requested to resign from parliament to pave the way for former Chief Minister of the North Central Province Berty Premalal Dissanayaka to enter parliament through the National list.

UPDATE: Fonseka later said she withdrew her resignation after President Mahinda Rajapaksa had refused to accept it.
