Malaka remanded

Malaka Silva, the son of Minister Mervyn Silva, was remanded today by the Colombo Fort Magistrate over the assault on an Army Major.

Silva and a few others were remanded till next week when they were presented in court today over the incident after they had surrendered to the police.

The Army Major was admitted to hospital following the incident and he had lodged a complaint with the police.

An army court of inquiry is also underway over the incident as it involved an army officer.

Government MPs protest against resolution

Government parliamentarians staged a protest outside parliament today against the U.S sponsored resolution which will be taken for a vote at the UN Human rights Council in Geneva today. The government members carried placards and wore black armbands during the protest and walked around the parliament voicing anger against the resolution. Canada to independently evaluate situ

A Canadian Parliamentary delegation on a visit to Sri Lanka will stop in various parts of the country and seek to independently evaluate the situation on the ground, the Canadian Foreign Ministry said.
