Polls end with no major incidents

Elections for the Eastern, Sabaragamuwa and North Central provinces ended this evening sans any major violence.

The Department of elections said that by 2 this afternoon over 50 percent of voter turnout had been recorded from all three provinces.

This included 51 percent in Batticaloa, 55 percent in Ampara, 55 in Trincomalee, 45 in Ratnapura, 50 in Kegalle, 50 in Anuradhapura and 45 percent in Pollonaruwa.

Additional Elections Commissioner R M L Ratnayake told the Colombo Gazette that overall the election was conducted in a peaceful manner.

He said that counting will begin at 6 pm and the first result is expected by midnight tonight.

The unit at the Elections Department monitoring election violations said it had received 117 complaints by 4pm.

Of the major incidents reported to the police was a clash between UPFA and SLMC supporters in Pullmudai where two people were injured.
