Rain in hydro catchment areas

Heavy rain had been experienced in hydro catchment areas, the government information department quoted the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) as saying today.

According to the CEB, water levels in the hydro catchment areas had also risen which could in turn help resolve the electricity crisis.

The delay of the monsoon and reduction in water levels at hydro catchment areas coupled with a breakdown in the Norochcholai coal power plant resulted in the CEB being forced to impose power cuts around the island recently.

Meanwhile the department of meteorology said that there will be showers at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts tomorrow.

Thundershowers will also develop at a few places in the Eastern and Uva provinces during the afternoon or evening.

Southwesterly winds can be strengthen (up to 60 km/hr) occasionally over the country and surrounding sea areas.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has invited the United National Party (UNP) to join its broad alliance.
