The police Special Task Force (STF) will be deployed to the eastern province today in order to tighten security in the area ahead of the provincial council elections.
According to the police media unit security in the eastern province is to be increased from today following a rise in election related violence in the area.
Clashes had been reported in the eastern province over the last couple of weeks mostly involving the Sri Lankan Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the UPFA.
The elections for three provincial councils including the eastern province will take place on Saturday 8 September.
The Elections Secretariat has already received over 300 complaints relating to the violation of election laws while the police has recorded just over 90 incidents related to the polls.
