Over 48,000 criminals arrested

Over 48,000 criminals who had warrants against their name were arrested between the beginning of July and the 26^th of this month, the police media unit said today.

The police said that 48,977 wanted persons were arrested during that period with most arrests being from the Western Province.

All those who were arrested were produced in court and remanded while a few were released on bail, the police statement said.

The arrests were carried out in special operations following instructions issued by IGP N.K Illangakoon.

Of those arrested 13,307 were from the Western Province, 5106 from the Southern province, 7329 from the Central province, 6992 from the Wayamba province and 6047 from the Sabaragamuwa province.
