China and Sri Lanka to boost military ties

China is to boost military ties with Sri Lanka following talks held between Chinese Minister of National Defence General Liang Guanglie and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa today.

China is providing US$ 100 million for army welfare projects initiated by the Ministry of Defence to set up accommodation and infrastructure facilities in army camps in the north and east.

The government said that China has also announced a grant of US$1.5 million for the modernization of the Defense Services College in Colombo for children of security forces personnel and the police.

A cordial discussion was held between the visiting Chinese Defence Minister and Secretary Defence on matters of bilateral importance between the two friendly states. Secretary Defence greatly appreciated the valued assistance and cooperation extended by China in times of great need, the Defence Ministry said.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between General Liang Guanglie and  Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa with regards to development assistance of an academic building complex for the Sri Lanka Military Academy.

The Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonathilaka, Commander of the Army Lt Gen Jagath Jayasooriya, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral DWAS Dissanayaka and Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal HD Abeywickrama were also present at the occasion.
