The DMK staged protest in the Indian Rajya Sabha today over the decision by the Indian government to continue to provide training for the Sri Lankan militray.
DMK members moved to the aisles carrying banners that read ‘Stop Training Sri Lankan Army’ the moment Chairman Hamid Ansari called the House to order.
“Please don’t do that…no banners please,” Mr Ansari pleaded with DMK members.
When DMK members started moving towards the Well, Mr Ansari warned them that he “will name them” if they stepped into the Well, the Indian media reported.
Meanwhile calling New Delhi’s friendship with Colombo as “one sided”, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Tuesday said it was a shame that New Delhi continued to train Sri Lankan military personnel.
Karunanidhi said in a statement that Sri Lanka considered China and Pakistan as more friendly nations than India.
In such a juncture, “it is an insult to Tamil Nadu and Tamil sentiments” that the central government has decided to keep training Sri Lankan military personnel in the country.
Minister of state for defence MM Pallam Raju said on Monday that Sri Lanka was a friendly country and India would continue to train military personnel from that country.
