Five policemen attached to the Mihintale police station have been suspended after two policemen were found to be under the influence of liquor while on duty.
The police media unit said that on Monday night four policemen were on duty in a police mobile unit in the Mihintale area.
Information had then been received by the Anuradhapura police that the policemen on duty on the mobile patrol in Mihintale were drunk.
An investigating officer was then sent to the area and the four policemen were taken to the Mihintale police station.
It was later found that two police constables who were in the mobile patrol were drunk while on duty.
Instructions were given to keep the constables at the police station overnight but the officer on duty had failed to keep them there.
As a result the police officer on duty as well as the four others who were in the police mobile patrol with the two drunk police constables have been suspended and will be charged, the police media unit said.
