The navy said it 37 Chinese fishermen who were poaching in Sri Lankan waters lat night.
Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that the Chinese were on board two fishing trawlers when they were spotted off Batticaloa.
He said that the navy arrested them for fishing in Sri Lankan waters illegally and they are to be handed over to the police for further investigations.
“According to an agreement China has with Sri Lanka the fishermen can catch fish beyond Sri Lanka’s maritime boundary but these fishermen were seen fishing within our territorial waters so that’s why they were arrested,” the navy spokesman said.
He also said that two Sri Lankans were with the 37 Chinese crew on the trawlers at the time they were arrested.
