TNA member arrested over human smuggling (Audio)

The police say they have arrested three people including a Tamil National Alliance (TNA) member who is contesting the Eastern Provincial council elections, over allegations they are involved in human smuggling.

The TNA member has been identified as 38 year old Suresh Kumar.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the suspects had taken money from Tamils to send them overseas through illegal means.

“Over the past few days there were several reports of attempts by people to go overseas by boat illegally. Most incidents were reported from Trincomalee. We had reported how the Tamil Diaspora may also be involved in human smuggling and that has now been confirmed,” the police spokesman said.

Rohana said that the police are looking for more suspects who are alleged to be involved in the human smuggling operation.

He said that the two key suspects were believed to have been involved in attempts to send Tamils to Australia by boat. (Colombo Gazette)
