Bank manageress arrested

The manageress of the Peoples Bank branch in Piliyandala has been arrested for defrauding over Rs. 114 million, the CID said yesterday.

CID sources said that the lady is the wife of the coordinating secretary of a government Minister and she was arrested following investigations on Friday.

According to the CID the manageress had pilfered the money from accounts at the bank and transferred it to another bank.

Investigations are now underway to see what the money was used for or was going to be used for following suspicion it was to be for a hotel project.

Further investigations are underway.

Ex Deputy Minister Gunawardena released on bail

Former Deputy Minister?Sarana Gunawardena was released on bail by the Gampaha Magistrate today after he was produced in court in relation to an assault incident. Gunawardena was released on two Rs. 50,000 personal bails. The former Deputy Minister was arrested last month over allegations he was involved in an election related assault incident. Tax on imported sugar, potatoes increased

The tax on imported sugar and potatoes has been increased with effect from today, the Finance Ministry said. Accordingly the commodity levy on?imported sugar has been increased by Rs. 12 per kilogram and and the levy on imported? potatoes has been increased by Rs. 10 per kilogram. The Finance Ministry said that the move to increase the levy on?potatoes was in order to assist the local market.
