A special police operation was carried out in Colombo today to look for dengue mosquito breeding grounds and 53 people were subsequently arrested, the police media unit said.
The police said that the special operation was carried out on the instructions of Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The police said that Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena had sought the assistance of the Defence Ministry to crackdown on dengue mosquito grounds.
Following this request it was decided to carry out special raids to look for dengue mosquito breeding grounds in the city.
During the raid carried out between 9am and 4pm today the police 53 people were arrested for having dengue mosquito breeding grounds.
Over 750 police officers, 200 public health inspectors and 600 from the army, private security units and others took part in the operation.
Legal action is to be filed against those who were arrested today, the police media unit said adding that similar operations will be carried out in other areas as well.
