The police obstructed a protest march in Jaffna today which was staged against the alleged forced occupation of civilian land by the military.
According to the media in Jaffna, over 200 people took part in the protest march including Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Jaffna district parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah.
The demonstrators were obstructed halfway through the rally by the police while they were heading towards the Tellippalai secretariat.
A tense situation then arose between the police and the demonstrators as the police prevented the rally from proceeding further.
However a discussion took place between the police and MP Mavai Senathirajah and it was agreed that a select few will be allowed to proceed towards the secretariat to hand over a petition.
Meanwhile the Jaffna based Uthayan newspaper reported that some protestors were attacked while they were returning home.
Masked men on motorbikes had attacked a group of people returning in a bus home following the protest.
