Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K Illangakoon today assured an impartial investigation into the shooting incident at the JVP political rally in Hambantota on Friday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Media Center for National Security (MCNS), the IGP said that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is also involved in the investigation.
He said that statements have already been recorded from several eye witnesses and one suspect has been identified.
Asked if an underworld figure who has been linked with the shooting will be arrested, the IGP said there was a warrant for his arrest.
He also dismissed allegations that armed groups were freely roaming the area in Hambantota where the shooting took place.
Armed gunmen on motorbikes carried out the shooting on Friday evening targeting the JVP rally killing two people including a woman.
The JVP blamed the government over the incident but the government said an internal rift in the party may have resulted in the shooting incident. (Colombo Gazette)
