Cement for new airport stolen

Over 36,500 kilos of cement meant for the new international airport in Mattala was seized after it was stolen and two people were also arrested, the police media unit said today.

The police said that the cement was seized when it was being unloaded by a group in Habaraduwa last evening.

Investigations revealed that the cement was to be transported from Galle to Mattala but was diverted to another location by the suspects.

The stolen cement was to be sold by another dealer who has so far evaded arrest, the police media unit said.

The police said that a lorry which was to be used to transport the cement from Habaraduwa to another location was seized.
