The police, Special Task Force (STF) and army have been deployed to conduct search operations in Katuwana, Hambantota where a shooting incident took place last evening at a JVP rally killing two and injuring one person.
Police spokesman S.P Ajith Rohana said that statements have so far been recorded from around 20 people over the incident.
He also said that three special police teams have been deployed to conduct investigations on the incident.
The gunmen had opened fire when the rally was underway killing a woman and another person.
The JVP said that several people were injured in the incident but the police spokesman insisted that only one person was injured and was admitted to hospital.
The government said that intra-party rivalry led to the shooting incident involving gunmen on a motorbike.
However the official website of the JVP blamed the government for the incident and said that an underworld figure identified as Joolampitiye Amare was involved in the shooting. (Colombo Gazette)
