A group of 53 illegal asylum seekers were arrested off the eastern seas yesterday and were remanded by the Hambantota Magistrate last evening, the police media unit said today.
The police said that the boat was stopped by the navy while it was believed to be heading towards Australia.
All those who were arrested were handed over to the criminal investigations department by the navy and among them were four human traffickers.
The police said that there were 47 Tamils and two Indians among the boat people who were arrested.
Investigations revealed that they had all departed from Batticaloa on Sunday.
They were all produced before the Hambantota Magistrate last evening and remanded till the 20th of this month. (Colombo Gazette)
