Another asylum boat seized

A group of 53 illegal asylum seekers were arrested off the eastern seas yesterday and were remanded by the Hambantota Magistrate last evening, the police media unit said today.

The police said that the boat was stopped by the navy while it was believed to be heading towards Australia.

All those who were arrested were handed over to the criminal investigations department by the navy and among them were four human traffickers.

The police said that there were 47 Tamils and two Indians among the boat people who were arrested.

Investigations revealed that they had all departed from Batticaloa on Sunday.

They were all produced before the Hambantota Magistrate last evening and remanded till the 20^th of this month. (Colombo Gazette)

Canada supports communities impacted by the COVID-19 crisis in Sri Lanka

The Government of Canada has provided over CAD $56,000 (approximately 7.5 million LKR) to support Sri Lanka?s response to the COVID-19 pandemic through targeted relief to some of those most affected in vulnerable communities. More coronavirus patients detected

Four more persons infected with COVID-19 were detected in Sri Lanka today. The Ministry of Health said the patients detected with the were from Bandaranayake Mawatha in Colombo 12. The new patients increase the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sri Lanka to 334. A total of 222 patients among the infected have been reported as active cases.
