The police said that they had arrested 11 people in Puttalam today as they were preparing to travel to Australia illegally.
According to the police media unit the 11 would-be illegal asylum seekers were brought to Puttalam yesterday and kept at a lodge behind the Puttalam hospital.
Of those arrested nine were from Batticaloa and two from Mullaitivu, the police media unit said this afternoon.
The police also said that the human traffickers involved in the racket had been identified and are to be arrested.
Investigations revealed that the would-be asylum seekers had paid Rs. 200,000 to the traffickers to be taken by boat to Australia.
The Puttalam police are conducting further investigations. (Colombo Gazette)
