Freshers at a university in Sri Lanka are seen in this video being ragged on their first day to University. This amateur video was leaked to the Colombo Gazette by an organisation campaigning against ragging.
Clarification: The organisation which submitted this video to us had stated that the video was taken at the Ruhuna campus. However we have been notified by the Campus Vice Chancellor Prof. Susirith Mendis that that the video was not taken at Ruhuna. We apologize over any harm this video may have caused to the good name of the Ruhuna campus. The purpose of the video is not to harm the name of any university but to bring to the public attention how students are mistreated by seniors. (Colombo Gazette)
Note from the Ruhuna Vice Chancellor:
VIDEO DAMAGING THE GOOD NAME OF THE UNIVERSITY OF RUHUNA
It has been brought to my notice that there is a video on your website dated
2nd June 2012 on “Ragging in the Ruhuna University, Matara”.
This is completely false. The background clearly shows that these ragging
activities did not occur in the university of Ruhu7na, but some other
university. You should have verified the information before putting this
video naming the University of Ruhuna. It has caused untold damage to the
good name, reputation and dignity of the University, nationally and
internationally by this false claim.
The Derana news retelecast this video and a student identified the
university as the University of Visual & Performing Arts. Please check this
out. The video DOES NOT SHOW THE BUILDINGS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF RUHUNA IN
I request an apology and a correction to be placed on the Colombo Gazette to
make some reparation to the damage you have done to the University of
Prof. Susirith Mendis
