Lankan refugee makes strip-search claim

A Tamil refugee branded a security threat by intelligence agencies claims to have been victimised at a Sydney detention centre after he was stripped to his underwear in front of female guards.

Suvendran, who arrived at Christmas Island on a boat in June 2009 and cannot return to his native Sri Lanka, said he was manhandled after challenging guards who conducted a surprise search last week at the Sydney Immigration Residential Housing complex at Villawood.

He has lodged a formal complaint with the company that runs the centre, Serco.

Serco referred inquires about the claims to the Immigration Department, which denied any clothes were removed. (Brisbane Times)
