No political prisoners says Nimal

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told parliament this afternoon, there are no political prisoners in Sri Lanka only LTE suspects.

Speaking on the issue regarding the protest by over 200 Tamil prisoners demanding that their cases be heard or they be released, the Minister said that new courts will be established within the next one month to hear these cases.

He said that there are some 359 LTTE suspects in local prisons of which cases of 309 of them need to be heard.

The Minister said that in order to do that, new courts will be open in Colombo, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Mannar.

A massive protest is to be staged in Vavuniya tomorrow over the failure by the government to releae the prisoners.

The protest is to be organized by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) following a hunger strike launched by the prisoners in Colombo and prisons at other locations.

The prisoners claim they are political prisoners and have not been charged for over 3 years.   (Colombo Gazette)
