UNP invites SF to join alliance

The United National Party (UNP) today invited former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka to join the UNP led opposition alliance.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told reporters at a media briefing today that an open invitation has been issued to Fonseka to join the alliance.

He said that a similar invitation had been issued on an earlier occasion as well and the UNP working committee which met last evening had decided to invite him again.

Attanayake said that the UNP would like Fonseka to join them as they look to agitate against the government over the rise in the cost of living and other issues.

Fonseka contested the last Presidential election as a joint opposition candidate which was supported by the UNP.

Rebel UNP members Sajith Premadasa, Sugeewa Senasinghe and Budhika Pathirana were among those who met Fonseka at the Nawaloka hospital yesterday soon after he was discharged.
