Lankans not affected in Italy quake

The Ministry of External Affairs says there has not been loss of life or casualties reported among Sri Lankans following the earthquake in Italy.

The Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome, Italy have been monitoring the situation in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale at 4 am on May 20, 2012, affecting parts of the Italian regions of Bolonga and Modena.

According to the initial reports that the Embassy of Sri Lanka received from the Civil Protection Agency of Italy and the Sri Lankan community in the affected areas, no loss of life or casualties among the Sri Lankans have been reported.

However, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome has been instructed to closely monitor the developments and assist the Sri Lankans, if affected, in all the means possible.

The Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs will render all possible assistance to the public to obtain information about their next of kin in the affected areas.
