Fonseka given bail in deserter case

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was given conditional bail today in the case involving the harboring of army deserters during the last Presidential elections.

In granting bail to Fonseka the Colombo High Court ordered that he cannot leave the country without obtaining prior permission from the court.

He will however still remain in prison over the ‘White Flag’ case for which President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to pardon him.

Fonseka and his personal assistant Captain Senaka Haripriya de Silva were earlier indicted for harbouring army deserters and for committing mutiny and insubordination to the government.

The former Army Commander who is serving a three-year prison sentence is currently receiving treatment for a lung ailment at the Nawaloka Hospital.
