The Asia Pacific Broadcast Union (ABU), the broadcasting rights distributor in Asia for the London Olympic Games has written to the National Olympic Committee saying both Maharajah Television (MTV) and the state owned Rupavahini have been given rights to broadcast the 2012 games in Sri Lanka.
Addressing the media in Colombo today MTV Channel Head Chevaan Daniel said that no channel has been given the exclusive broadcasting rights for the games.
He also said that there was no deadline to bid to broadcast the games and as such when MTV did bid, even after SLRC had obtained the broadcasting rights, ABU had given MTV the rights as well.
A copy of a letter sent to the Chairman of the National Olympic Committee Hemasiri Fernando by ABU was also distributed to the media today at the press briefing hosted by MTV.
The letter states that SLRC does not have exclusive rights to broadcast the games and as ABU members both SLRC and MTV have been given equal rights.
Earlier SLRC Chairman Mohan Samaranayake had said that the exclusive broadcasting rights for the London Games had been awarded to SLRC.
