MR, Ranil discuss developments

Opposition and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees today and discussed the political developments in the country, the President’s office said.

An official at the President’s office told the Colombo Gazette that the meeting was cordial but refused to elaborate further.

Meanwhile UNP MP John Amaratunga said that a UNP delegation had accompanied Wickremesinghe for the meeting with the President.

He confirmed that both sides discussed the political situation in Sri Lanka.

The UNP meanwhile in a statement said that the focus of the meeting was the Parliament Select Committee (PSC) on a political solution.

According to the UNP the meeting took place on the invitation of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Earlier this year the UNP pledged its support to the government to solve the national question based on the recommendations of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

Today’s meeting also comes amidst speculation that former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka may be freed from prison this week.

The UNP has been pushing for Fonseka’s release and some UNP members have been meeting Fonseka in prison.
