UNP to meet the Speaker

The United National Party (UNP) is to meet parliament Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to obtain approval to hold a debate in parliament on abductions in the country.

The UNP had earlier written to parliament seeking a date to hold a debate on the spate of abductions mostly seen before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

UNP MP John Amaratunga said that he had received a letter yesterday (Tuesday) from the Secretary General of Parliament stating that approval must be obtained from the Speaker to hold such a debate.

As a result the UNP is to now seek a meeting with Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to obtain approval for the debate.
