Ravinatha appointed to Geneva

The External Affairs Ministry today appointed Ravinatha Aryasinha as the new ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva.

Aryasinha, who is now the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union will replace the current Ambassador Tamara Kunanayakam who had earlier strongly objected to her transfer.

Aryasinha confirmed to the Colombo Gazette that the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent him a letter today (Tuesday) regarding his appointment to Geneva.

It was reported last week that Kunanayakam is to be appointed as an Ambassador to a Latin American country.

Kunanayakam had last week said that her transfer may get misinterpreted as an attempt to censure her over the vote at the UN Human Rights Council which Sri Lanka lost in March.

The UN Human Rights Council had in March passed a resolution calling on Sri Lanka to investigate alleged human rights violations.

The resolution, sponsored by the US and co-sponsored by 40 other nations, was passed by 24 votes to 15, with 8 abstentions.
