The Island music awards is back

What an exciting scene it was when The Island Newspapers introduced Sri Lanka’s first ever music awards – The Island Music Awards – in 1988.

The Grammy-style awards ceremony was held at the Bougainvillea Ballroom of the Galadari Hotel.

Sri Lanka’s leading showbiz personalities were all present, and there were gasps and shouts of excitement as the winners were announced – Grammy Awards-style!

The glittering awards ceremony was held on February 21st, 1988, and featured all the big names in the local music scene, at that point in time. The show also brought into the spotlight the superb vocals of Roscoe Williams from the States.

The Island Newspapers have always been in the forefront of recognizing and appreciating local talent, and this is their way of saying ‘thank you for the music.’

The happening scene will again become a reality and the prestigious Island Music Awards will boom into action shortly – to recognize the contributions made by our western music artistes for the year 2011.

A panel, comprising legendary performers, Noeline, Maxi Rosairo and Raj Senewiratne, has already moved into action – working on the nominees for the following categories: Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, Duo/Trio of the Year, and Showbiz Personality of the Year.

Music lovers would be able to vote for their favourites in these categories – Most Popular Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, Duo/Trio of the Year, also Most Popular Club DJ, Radio DJ, Radio Station, and Most popular TV Presenter (Music).

This time, there will also be The Island Music Lifetime Awards, and three legends in the local music scene will be recognised..
