Another bus fare hike in July

Private bus operators are to go for another bus fare hike from July this year, the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) said.

LPBOA President Gemunu Wijeyratne told reporters today that they will push for the bus fare price hike owing to the increase in electricity rates and other overhead costs.

Wijeyratne said that the increase in the electricity rates adds to the overhead costs of bus operators when changing tyres and carrying out other electrical work to maintain the bus.

Meanwhile Wijeyratne also called for the removal of the private transport ministry saying it does not serve any purpose.

He also said that legal action will be filed against the National Transport omission over allegations of corruption.

Wijeyratne said that private bus operators have already filed a petition at the human Rights Commission seeking redress over some of the issues they face.

McDonald?s stores across Sri Lanka shut on Sunday after the US fast-food giant launched a legal battle with its local franchise holder over allegations of poor hygiene, court officials said.
