135 accidents in 24hrs

The police recorded 135 road accidents around the country over the 24 hour period ending at six this morning, the police media spokesman said.

According to police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana 10 people had died from road accidents during that same period.

He also said that 51 people were reported injured in road accidents over the past 24 hours ending this morning.

The police also arrested 120 drunk drivers yesterday and filed legal action against 101 drivers for speeding, the police spokesman said.

The police had recorded a rise in road accidents this year and have now decided to introduce a points system for drivers.

Drivers who drive poorly and lose points will eventually see their driving license being cancelled.  (Colombo Gazette)
